IMPORTANT: Ministry of Education Update

As you know, our Chief Medical Officer of Health has confirmed that the transmission of COVID-19 in schools has remained low, and schools remain a place for students to learn safely, with appropriate measures in place. However, the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve rapidly, and it has been determined that students and staff in the education system play an important role in supporting efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19. Cases across Ontario communities are rising quickly, and the new COVID-19 variants pose a serious threat.

In consultation with Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, it has been determined by the Ontario Government that all publicly funded and private elementary and secondary school students province-wide will participate in remote learning following the April break.

For ALL students, we will be initiating a full day (9:00 am – 3:50 pm) virtual school protocol beginning Monday April 19thKindergarten to grade 12 will have ZOOM classes as close to the regular schedule as possible. Parents of students in kindergarten to grade two can choose to have their children attend only limited or priority classes. Attendance is compulsory for grades 3-8 and mandatory for grades 9-12. Online schedules and teacher ZOOM meeting information will be provided later this week.

Prestige School firmly intends to have curriculum delivery continue during this period and course instruction will continue through this platform.  Students will have access to assignments and tests via their existing Google Classroom accounts.

Students and families who are in need of mental health resources have a number of options available to them, including Kids Help Phone, which offers 24/7 counselling and referral services across the province. To use this free resource, children can call 1-800-668-6868, or text CONNECT to 686868. School Mental Health Ontario also has a number of great resources for students, parents and families on their website. In addition, child and youth mental health agencies across the province continue to provide services.

We realize that this will have an impact on each household and that you will all have different challenges outside of your typical schedule. We are incredibly disappointed that we need to take these measures, but we do so with the Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health’s directives and the well being of the entire Prestige community in mind. We genuinely hope that you understand and trust that we are keeping your children’s best interests at the forefront of all of our decisions.

The government will continue to listen to the advice of public health experts, and we will update parents once a safe return to in-person learning is recommended.

We appreciate your support and patience as we navigate these uncertain times.
